If I forget to set my alarm, Is there a way to set it from my phone?
So glad you asked, YES, you can have a fully interactive app on your phone to turn your alarm on or off. Do you need to let someone in but don't want them to have your security codes? Just tap the app to disarm the system.
Can I ask Alexa to set set my alarm?
With Alexa, you can give voice commands to control your home automation and security functions that you have programmed into your security system. You'll need Alarm.com, and we can help with that.
How often should I test my security system?
Regular testing ensures the system is able to communicate with our Monitoring Center. Alarm systems should be tested once a month and after any changes to your phone, internet, or cable service.
What happens to my security system in a power outage?
It is important to make sure that your alarm system has a working backup battery. This will allow your system to remain functioning, even in the event of a power outage. Most alarm system backup batteries should be able to provide power for a day or more.
How often do I need to change my battery?
You can expect your battery to last anywhere from 3 to 5 years.
What should I do if I want to change phone service providers?
Some of Preferred Security's security systems come with the ability to communicate with our monitoring center without the need of a land line phone service. Often, systems without wireless communication built in can be upgraded with additional equipment to gain that ability. If you have questions about whether or not your system will work with your new phone service, call Customer Service at 302.834.7800. Please give us a call if you have already switched phone providers. We would like to test your system to make sure we are still communicating properly. If you have already switched phone providers, contact Customer Service to have a test performed and ensure that your phone service is compatible with your monitoring system.
I don't have/would like to get rid of my land line. Can I Still Install An Alarm System?
The short answer is yes. Nowadays you do not need a home phone line in order to have your home alarm system monitored. Preferred Security has multiple monitoring options including phone line and cellular monitoring. Ultimately cellular alarm system monitoring is the safest and most reliable method of monitoring your home alarm system.
Do I have to register my alarm?
If you live in Delaware, you do. Failure to do so could result in a civil fine by the State of Delaware. Go to our Alarm Registration page (under support) if you haven't already registered your alarm. If you need additional help, please call the office.

Will my pet set off my alarm system?
We know that your pets are part of your family. It is critical to know about pets with home alarm systems. Will the pets be in the house when the system is set? How big are the animals? How many animals, and what types, do you have? Today there are special “pet avoidance” motion detectors that are designed to allow animals up to 80 lbs to be in the home without setting off the alarm. If you have larger animals, or several pets, there are special installation techniques we can use. Notify us immediately if you think your pet may be causing false alarms!
What does a security system protect my home from?
In addition to detecting break-ins, a home security system can include several other sensors for things like: Carbon monoxide & Smoke detection.
When is it time to upgrade my security system?
This question has two good answers.
First, anytime you would like to take advantage of new technology.
Second, It is a good idea to upgrade your system every 10 to 15 years. Around this time frame components could start to malfunction and may cause issues such a false alarms. A technology update will give you the latest capabilities provided by the security industry.
